By Madelyn Chung May 27, But it was also partially about me. During my teens and early 20s, I was vehemently against dating Asian guys. When friends tried to pair me up with the one Chinese guy in elementary school, as if we were meant to be because I was the only Chinese girl, I quickly became annoyed. I scoffed and walked away, irritated at the unspoken expectation that I should to stick to my own race.

Now, I can see that I was surrounded by many, many problematic messages about the desirability of Asian men or lack thereof , which in turn led me to believe that they were socially awkward, passive, unattractive—and therefore not dateable.

Asian women are often fetishized by western men, while at the same time considered the “property” of men of their own race.

Our editorial content is not influenced by any commissions we receive. As a white kid growing up in a largely Chinese suburb of Toronto, I spent much of my time thinking about Asian girls. Back then, the term was shorthand for someone white who had a crush on someone Asian, and at our school, it applied to the girls as much as it did the boys.

To me, it was just another form of teasing that I threw into my sizable trashcan of forgotten terms, lying dormant all these years—until now. To some, its subtext is heavily charged. A sexual objectifier. Such men believe all Asian women are docile and hypersexual, and happily project these qualities onto potential romantic partners. On the contrary, I’m sure my friends see me as the educated, well-intentioned, liberal-minded guy I am.

Think for a second about what my friends are saying when they describe me as someone with yellow fever. I accept that. It suggests that their race was more important to me than their other attributes. The term, then, becomes a way to shame white men and Asian women for entering relationships with each other.

Are you a black woman attracted to White men, but despite how much they may stare from afar or act friendly, you never get asked out on a date?

In my life, I’ve often encountered a certain type of Western guy who was attracted to Asian women. He tended to be older, white and yes, creepy. I wanted to.

I mentioned it to Leslie, which led to a long-winded conversation about dating and marriage and gossiping Vietnamese mothers, which in turn led to Leslie asking me to share a little on my experiences. Although I love my culture and speak Vietnamese, I am mostly American in my values. And values are where it counts in relationships. I am hard-headed, ambitious and probably a little too honest to fit the mold of a traditional Vietnamese wife. I find that Caucasian men tend to understand this a little bit better.

Feminism is making headway in Asian countries, but family dynamics have not changed that much, unless you are looking at a 1.

The Other ‘Yellow Fever’—Why Are Some People Exclusively Attracted to Asian Women?

I’ve been fetishized by white — and non-white — men everywhere. I’m not alone. It seems that men have an Asian fetish, and I bear the brunt of it.

I once asked my first boyfriend what his friends thought about me. Apparently they were amused that he was dating a Chinese girl, and teased him about “riding her like a Kawasaki. Growing up in New Zealand, I often grappled with being different. I never believed in Santa and rice was my go-to starch. By my late teens, I realized that being Chinese also gave me a typecast sexual identity: bashful, privately kinky, and rumored to be in possession of an extra snug, sideways vagina.

I first heard murmurings about “yellow fever” at university. I wasn’t surprised that a piece of slang had been coined for men—and, it seems, predominantly white men—who harbor a special affection towards Asian women; we all know a guy whose dating history reads like a copy of the Chinese Yellow Pages. Plus, there are other hints out there: several niche dating websites cater to those seeking Asian women; in Pornhub’s Year in Review , “Japanese” and “Asian” took pride of place alongside “lesbian” and “step-mom” in the top 20 search terms; and if you’re a woman of Asian heritage, you might have had the pleasure of being approached by someone who thought using the phrase worked, in some inexplicable way, as a chat-up line.

So we know that so-called “yellow fever” exists. The question I’ve always wanted to ask is: why? Dr Ed Morrison, a senior lecturer in evolutionary psychology at Portsmouth University, says the main evolutionary theory for mate selection is “optimal outbreeding”—that “the best mate is one who is similar to you, but not too similar”. We usually choose people from the same sub population, but avoid genetic relatives because of the risk of mutations in offspring.

It makes sense that white men could be attracted to Asian women because they’re sufficiently genetically different. But there has to be more to the picture, especially when it comes to men who are exclusively attracted to Asian women.
